Understanding GST in India
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a destination-based tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple indirect taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty.
For small business owners, freelancers, and retailers, calculating GST accurately is vital for creating tax invoices, pricing products, and filing returns. However, the math can get confusing when switching between GST Exclusive and GST Inclusive pricing.

How to Calculate GST (Formulas & Examples)
Let's break down the mathematical formulas for the two types of GST calculations:
1. GST Exclusive (Adding GST on Base Price)
When you have a base price and want to add GST on top of it.
Formula:
GST Amount = Base Price × (GST Rate ÷ 100)
Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount
Example:
If your consulting fee is ₹10,000 and the GST rate is 18%:
- GST Amount = ₹10,000 × (18 ÷ 100) = ₹1,800
- Total Price = ₹10,000 + ₹1,800 = ₹11,800
---
2. GST Inclusive (Extracting GST from Total Price)
When you have a final price (e.g. MRP) and want to find out how much of that amount is base price and how much is GST tax.
Formula:
Base Price = Total Price ÷ (1 + (GST Rate ÷ 100))
GST Amount = Total Price - Base Price
Example:
If a customer pays ₹11,800 inclusive of 18% GST:
- Base Price = ₹11,800 ÷ (1 + 0.18) = ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000
- GST Amount = ₹11,800 - ₹10,000 = ₹1,800

CGST, SGST, and IGST Split
Under India's dual GST system, the tax is split based on where the seller and buyer are located:
Sales within the same state (Intra-state)
The tax is split equally into:
- CGST (Central GST): Goes to the Central Government.
- SGST (State GST): Goes to the State Government.
- For an 18% GST rate, the split is 9% CGST and 9% SGST.
Sales to another state (Inter-state)
The full tax is collected as IGST (Integrated GST) and goes to the Central Government, which then shares it with the destination state.
- For an 18% GST rate, the tax is 18% IGST.
